Is name-calling ethical?

Legal Profession Blog is predicting the dismissal of an interesting complaint against an Illinois lawyer.  According to the charge, the lawyer told an unrepresented opposing party, outside the courtroom, to “have a nice day, you piece of shit”.

I won’t hazard a guess at how the complaint will be decided.  I will say that if it is dismissed, it will be a dark day for the legal profession.

To my great surprise, there seems to have been some question in North Carolina, at least until this decision of that state’s Supreme Court, whether sleeping with a client’s wife might be unethical.

Equal opportunity book burning: Brisbane lawyer burns the Koran and Bible

The Daily Telegraph, out of Australia, reported today that Brisbane lawyer Alexander Stewart videotaped himself smoking pages from both the Koran and the Bible, and posted the video to YouTube.

Mr. Stewart is an atheist, and was, at least at the time the video was posted, working for the Queensland University of Technology.

His most recent cinematic effort seems to have been inspired by the controversy created by Terry Jones’ equally hare-brained promise to hold a Koran burning protest to commemorate this year’s anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Stupidity, it seems, knows no political boundary.

New allegations against Manitoba judge

A Winnipeg woman has complained to the Canadian Judicial Council regarding the conduct of Justice Lori Douglas.

The complainant alleges that pictures of Justice Douglas having an aspect of bondage and sado-masochism raise a reasonable apprehension of bias in proceedings in which she was involved.

The woman applied for a prevention order against her estranged husband.  Justice Douglas heard the motion, and refused to grant the order.  Instead, Justice Douglas issued a no-contact order that applied to both parties.
